You’re not alone! Many people have questions before enrolling. We’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions to help you understand the course better and feel confident about signing up.
Yes, a valid non expired BLS certificate from Heart and Stroke is required.
If you do not meet the requirements you must complete a new BLS Course or the online Challenge exam.
BLS Renewal Prerequisite Challenge is a short online assessment designed to ensure course candidates possess knowledge of current and critical BLS concepts required to succeed on the BLS Renewal course.
The BLS Renewal Prerequisite Challenge is for experienced providers who:
- Have an expired Heart & Stroke BLS Provider certification
– OR – - Have a current BLS card from another training agency
– OR – - Have current Heart & Stroke BLS Provider certification but wish to assess their readiness for the BLS Renewal course.
Students who complete the online assessment with a score of at least 84% will receive a BLS Renewal Prerequisite Challenge certificate. Students can print their certificate and receive a copy via email. Students are required to provide a copy of the certificate to their instructor before beginning the course.
The full BLS Blended Provider course duration depends on the pace of the online component:

| Total: | 3 – 5 hours |
This qualification is required for admission to medical faculties and schools in Manitoba and across other provinces, and it’s also a prerequisite for advanced paramedic programs such as ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support).

After you pass the course, you’ll be issued a Heart & Stroke Canada e‑card certificate that’s valid for one year. Printed cards are available on request for an additional fee.
Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
Eligible for two (2) credits per hour under Section 2 of the MOC Program as “Traineeships”.
Other Colleges / Regulatory Bodies
Heart & Stroke courses are recognized across Canada. We are committed to continuous assessment and accreditation. Check with your college or professional affiliation to see if this course is eligible for credits.
